Last Friday, Kevin Rollins was in Beijing, China giving a speech at Peking University; today Rollins “resigned” abruptly as chief executive of Dell Inc.

In a one-page news release distributed at 4:29 p.m. (EST) today, Dell announced that Michael Dell was assuming the duties of CEO “effective immediately.” The release further stated the Mr. Dell would “retain his duties as Chairman of the Board.”

According to Reuters, Rollins had been with Dell since April 1996 when he joined the firm as senior vice president of corporate strategy. One month later he was named general manager of the Americas and became vice chairman in 1997. In 2001, Rollins role with Dell evolved again as he relinquished the vice chairmanship to become president and chief operating officer. He was then tapped as CEO in July 1994.
